Yes, there are several "ways" to network two macs together (Airport, firewire) but the nice thing about ethernet is that all macs that I play with have it. Not all of them have firewire and/ or airport. and yes, though a nice Airport extreme base station would do the trick, the ethernet card was considerably cheaper.
