I have not had much success using usb wireless adapters with older iMacs. The mac drivers tend to be buggy, and the usb 1.1 bus on the iMac tends to be a bottleneck. I've seen more success with iMacs running ubuntu with linux drivers, but it's still relatively slow because of the bus.
