Just guessing ... You might have one or more bad memory sticks. When apps quit unexpectedly, this could be a sign of bad RAM. I would run the Ram Test in Applejack in Single User mode after installing it with memtest included, and see if it indicates bad RAM. Then proceed to determine which one it is. cpu seemingly hungry might indicate a disk going bad. It spins its wheels so to speak, while trying to Read/Reread a bad hard drive, and it seems like its going wonkers with the apps. A bad hard drive may be another area to investigate.
