Kris, an excellent suggestion, and I thank you for it. Unfortunately,
to my own surprise, that wasn't the problem in this case.

Kasey, this happens after the OS boots. It puts them on the otherwise
normal desktop, just as they'd be if I actually wanted them there.
Except I... uh... er... don't.
