Any one know how to make an HP 870Cse printer work on a iMac G3?

HP made a special Parallel-to-USB adapter cable specifically for the G3 iMac called "HP Printer Cable Kit for iMacâ„¢ P/N C4033-60003". This cable came with special drivers for some HP printers on CD for OS 9. You didn't need any special drivers for OS X.

All these Parallel-to-USB cables are the same, so you don't need the special HP cable, any generic cable will do, at least in OS X which requires no special drivers or software. In OS 9 you may actually need the special HP cable because the VendorID# & DeviceID# in the software would probably need to match the HP cable, but I'm not certain, the generic cables may work? I've got the special software for OS 9 which I can attach to an email for you if necessary (meaning you could buy a used HP cable without the CD). I've used this cable and software with printers other than the 8 specific models listed, including a LaserJet, so I'm nearly 100% certain there is no problem for the 870Cse using a USB adapter cable.

Here's some generic Parallel-to-USB adapter cables for cheap ($3 shipped):

Here are some of the real HP cables, but they're more expensive and only one appears to have the CD disc:

I'd strongly recommend this USB adapter cable solution for anyone still using an old Serial printer that also has a Parallel port available, it changes these useless old printers into a useable USB printer for about $3 total cost. I'd recommend getting a Parallel-to- USB cable and I think you're golden.
