I almost never burn the DVD, that defeats my purpose. I run Handbrake to convert the rip to a modern compressed format in a more reasonable 700-800MB file size. Then I trash the near 5GB rip file forever. If I were going to burn a DVD I'd have at least six converted rips on it in compressed format. I can't see much difference in quality between the 700MB Handbrake version and the original, certainly not 4GB worth of quality difference.
