Am I missing a file, or is this cockpit error?

I think it's a cockpit error. The fact that it's opening Classic shows that your preferences for the .mov filetype are wrong and you're preference for .mov is an OS 9 application. You need to find the actual .mov file and highlight the file and do a "Get Info" (Cmd-I) on the file, and in the Get Info window go to the "Open with" and change this to a native OS X application (normally Quicktime Player for OS X, but alternatively VLC or any other appropriate media player). Then use the "Change All..." button beneath to change this preference for all .mov files.

Also, if you're using Quicktime Player you should install Perian to add the codecs for most common video file types.
