It's the same reason you put a lock on your front door, in addition
to the lock on your desk drawer. Or the lock on your car door, in

The primary reason I can think of to use the strongest wireless
connection security you can is to prevent others from accessing the
Internet via your router. Most people don't like to receive cease
and desist letters from their ISP because they've been (surprise!)
downloading movies illegally. Sure you would never do that, but how
about someone who happens to be pirating your Internet to pirate
movies?
I think a desist letter is the "good news" version. I'd be more
worried about the policia SWAT team raiding your home in the wee
hours, because they found someone trading kiddie porn from your IP...
Leaving your service open creates a bad liability.
