John, I guess I failed to make clear in my post the modem when
connected directly to the computer works fine, in fact it works much
faster, no doubt because of the speed limitations of my old base
station. I also have Time-Warner and when I experienced the ABS
failure I called them and they reset the cable modem. I've not heard
anything of the reliability of Airport base stations but in my case
age may have something to do with the failure. MacTracker says Apple
quit making my model in 2004. Thanks for your response.

Are you sure the modem is getting internet signal? This happens to
my Time Warner Cable modem about twice a month. I have to reset the
modem and go through the reconnection process.
