I wanted to find out some information on a Power Mac G5 2.5 DP. I'm slightly confused on this. Someone is selling theirs. I read on EveryMac that these have the Liquid Cooling (that seems to be problematic) but the current owner says the CPUs are both air cooled. Is there something I am missing? Also, they said an Apple Genius said the logicboard is going and needs to be replaced (didn't specifically state what the problem is). They are selling this for $100 and all in all doesn't seem like a bad deal, however I'm not sure if I could find a new logicboard and if I can how much it would cost. Any ideas?

You can find all the information you need about any Mac by using the application MacTracker:
<http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10816>

The ONLY "dual" 2.5GHz is the "June 2004" PowerMac G5, which is the very first water-cooled PowerMac G5. The other two "June 2004" PowerMacs, the 1.8GHz & 2.0GHz were both air-cooled. As we've discussed before, the term "dual" is VERY confusing on the G5's because some of the duals have two single-core CPUs; while others have one dual-core CPU. The "quad" 2.5GHz is the only other 2.5GHz, and the only G5 to have two dual-core CPUs. If it truly is air-cooled, it's a different speed, likely 2.3GHz.

I don't think this is a very good idea, even at the cheap price. PPC Macs have been abandoned by Apple, with 10.5.8 being the final PPC update, with PPC Java support being jettisoned 6 months prior to that. I know G5s are tempting at cheap prices, and a $100 G5 seems like a killer deal, but I suspect this one could become a royal pain. You need more information about "why" the logicboard needs replacement. If it's something minor like a dead Firewire port or a bad RAM slot, that might be acceptable risk, but if it's something major, I'd pass myself.

Another option would be to buy it, and part it out for more than you paid. The power supply alone should be worth more than $100, and the case is also valuable, as are the CPUs, RAM, video card, wireless card, etc. You might get enough money to buy a decent hackintosh. The HQ-A list could help you find a reasonably priced hack, perhaps one of the Shuttles?
