No it wouldn't help, not with digests.

What you seem to want is to get all the posts separately without
getting all the posts separately.

I guess!

What would further reduce the clunk factor is if you could select the post from the digest that you want to reply to and hit reply and the subject line is the relevant one instead of having to fish for it and paste it in.

Recently, I don't know if anyone noticed, there have been improvements: now one can click a list item in the "Topic Summary" at the start of the digest and go to the post in the below. Good! Never used to happen before.

And another improvement, when you hit reply to the digest, you do not get a no-reply address text inserted into the the email To field but the real McCoy instead. So that is good too and saves having to wipe and reinsert the correct working To: address.

The closest you can come to a news reader with an email list is:

1) get the messages separately
2) filter them into folders appropriately
3) view them in threaded view

I found an applescript for Mail to burst mime digests into separate
emails here <http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Misc_Scripts.html>

And then one needs to fish the one wanted out and to throw the others out? Not for me, thanks. What I already do is not *that* hard. And there is always the web based GG that can be logged into... I guess that is not all that bad either... I am just saying...

If I got separate emails from LEM all day and night, could I have it that my attention is not drawn to them? No ping, no red dots in the dock next to the mail.app icon, they go into separate folder and quietly and I look at them when I want. Think of it as a farmer setting traps on his property, as he is sitting quietly doing his accounts by the fire in his homestead, he does not want to hear each trap go off or the agonising death throws of each little rabbit, he will collect all on his regular run the next day. But he does want to hear if a bear or a lion gets through his fences, so not all activity is needed to be silent. Some he does not want to be distracted by and others he does.

The issue here is that email and usenet news are quite different
things, and deal with completely different message structures.

Google ports usenet messages to their Google Groups format; but not
vice versa.

I was vaguely imagining a usenet group that was restricted so that only members could actually post, the rest, the lower unwashed classes could look on in envy but not touch.
