Yes they all come FAT 32 so for a Mac it needs to be formated. I just never had one so slow, I thought they're all the same in that respect.



Actually no they don't. OS X reads/writes FAT32 devices just fine, and the format will make no difference in how fast it works.

The only two reasins to format it HFS are:

1) Keep nosy PC users from seeing what's on your device, maybe.
2) Setting one up as a bootable device, which probably also requires re-partitioning them.
