Check the fans on the cards (unless they are fanless of course).
Heat is usually the biggest killer of video cards and hard drives.
Just drop the side of the DA down , boot it up and check to see if the fans are 
spinning.
Shut it down when you find out.
I had a fan on my 9800 card go a while back and it made a noise exactly like a 
hard drive dying.
Replacing a fan is a little fiddly but a lot cheaper than a new card.
