ADC monitors can cause all sorts of issues. 

This exact thing has happened a couple times with an Apple 23" display that a 
professor here has, each time it was a dead power brick for the monitor that 
was causing it.

He finally got Apple (it was under Applecare) to give him a power brick for a 
30" display (which is a higher wattage rating), and he's had no troubles since.
