I bought a G4 iMac at FreeGeek in Portland, a few days ago, and it came with Ubuntu installed. It appears to be the Jaunty Jackalope.

But when I tried to install OS X, I couldn't get it to start up from the iMac's optical drive. Wouldn't boot.

The lovely young woman at FreeGeek gave me a disc with a utility that destroys everything on hard drives associated with the computer. Wouldn't boot off it, either.

I don't really know if the optical drive is even working properly, at this point. No evidence for it.

Any ideas? (I forget, can one boot OS X from a Firewire optical drive?)

I suppose I could call FreeGeek.com.... Hate to bother people who do such good work recycling computers, though.
