Flip 4 mac merely lets you open files in Quicktime. As I said, IIRC, FCP wants video in specific formats (which I am sure are explained in the documentation if you RTM) to manipulate it. If FCP wants to render it before it'll let you work with it, I'd suggest letting FCP render it first.
