You can also buy thermal sensors with LED readouts that only cost $10- $15. I bought one off ebay about a year ago to test some of my G4s with for this very reason. No worries about them melting - I think they are guaranteed up to 150ÂșC - way past the point of your CPU blowing up. A little care and you should be fine.
