Java has good support for PPC.

No, this isn't correct. Java support for the PPC was cut-off completely over a year ago. Starting with Java Update 4 for Leopard 10.5 the Java updates were "Intel only". The consequence is that all PPC Macs running Tiger or Leopard are left at Java version SE5 1.5.0_24 whereas the current Java for Intel Macs is Java SE6 1.6.0_20.

What's funny is that Sun quit Java 1.5 support in Dec.2009 with version 1.5.0_22 but Apple has continued to 1.5.0_24. Alternatively, Sun brought out Java 1.6 in Dec.2006 and is now at update 20, so this means PPC Macs are 21 updates behind, or 3.5 years behind the current Java version.

Just download the latest version from sun.com.

Sun.com <http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp> just has a link back to Apple. Apple handles all the Java updates for OS X, and the very first PPC software that Apple quit supporting was Java. AFAIK there will NEVER be Java SE6 1.6 available for PPC Macs. I know this because I use a Java program that requires Java SE6 1.6 in its current version, and I've been forced to use an older version written for Java SE5 1.5 on my PPC G5. I've looked hard into this issue, and if anyone knows of a way to get Java SE6 1.6 running on a PPC Mac that would be incredible since Apple no longer supports PPC Macs at all. If you want to test your Java version, you open Terminal and type the command: "java -version" without the quotes.

Also, there is a java test page at <http://www.javatester.org/version.html > but this has problems with Safari and can seize up your Safari. Safari SERIOUSLY needs to follow Chrome & Firefox and make each tab or window its own process so that one tab or window can't crash the whole browser.
