Yes you need the fan and if it's excessively noisy it's likely that it's got bearings that are shot. I've found Mouser Electronics <http://www.mouser.com> to be a reliable source for fan replacements. You'll likely need to carefully disassemble the fan and housing, because you'll need to reuse the housing.
