I installed OS10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5 onto an external FW HD with all the 
correct versions of my utilities like Data Rescue, DiskWarrior, TechToolPro 
plus a few others onto each partition. A simple case now of hooking up the 
drive, booting over FW to the appropriate OS and running the required utility 
to fix any problems.
There are from memory a few problems with upgraded CPUs and sometimes a trip to 
the terminal or a firmware hack is the best fix.

Some utilities I believe also rely on the Gestalt ID of a machine too for 
identification purposes which can be misleading. I don't know how you'd get 
around that one though.
