I have my printer connected to my base station and if I break that
connection it takes all kinds of convolutions to get my computer to

Break the connection in exactly what way?
Would that also show up in the system logs?
Networking errors should end up in system.log.
If the problem is within the CUPS printing subsystem, then the errors
will be thrown into the CUPS logs (/var/log/cups/). Those are also
viewing with Console.app...
