The Apple cards with the DEC "Tulip" IC are 100-percent compatible.
These cards were not made by Apple, but were rebranded my Apple.

The generic cards with a Realtek 8169 chip are compatible OOTB on
MacOS X, but require a driver for 9.2. This is the only gigabit E-net
card I am aware of which has an 9.2 driver as Apple never went beyond
10/100 in its PCI card offerings, although the later G4 Macs certainly
had an on-mobo 10/100/1000 capability.
