awhile back someone on this list told me what keys on the keyboard to push that would give me a "little black apple" and I don't remember what they are? anybody know?

Go to System Preferences>International and select the Input Menu tab. Check the "On" boxes for Character Palette and Keyboard Viewer, and the box at the bottom "Show input menu in menu bar". Now you should have a little American flag icon in the menu bar of Finder. Click the American flag icon and in the drop down menu select Keyboard Viewer. Keyboard Viewer is OS X's version of the OS 9 program called Key Caps, which shows you a keyboard that displays which characters are produced for the Command key, the Option key, the Shift key, the Control key and combinations of these. You can press these keys to see which combination produces the  character. If you need non-standard characters, choose Character Palette instead. Now you can find all these characters yourself right from the menu bar.
