They are perfectly usable as desktop machines...if you're deaf already, and 
live in a climate that needs year-round heating. 8-)

Servers in general (and the Xserve is one)  are loud, hot, and designed to run 
off in racks in specially cooled back rooms away from people. They tend to have 
very basic video built in, and not many USB ports and other expansion options.

We have one faculty member who got one, then found that his office's cooling 
couldn't handle it. He's now got a portable AC unit venting air out through the 
bottom of his door just to cool his office with the g5 workstation, the xserve 
and the raid that came with it (and those were in a specialized, 
sound-deadening mini rack, just to keep the noise level down).

There isn't much room for *him* left.
