FWIW, the exact same thing happened to me with a G3 iBook. Everything was right (formatting, the CDs), yet I couldn't install the software. I finally gave up, cloned my Pismo HDD to it using CCC (both the 10.4.11 and the 9.2.2 partitions), and it worked.
I still don't know what happened...
