Yes there should be obvious signs of leakage and bad smells, and the computer 
should not work.

'Accidentally' spill some iron filings into the case when you open it up. 
Remove your drives for 'testing purposes' turn it back on and watch the 
fireworks? With a fire extinguisher handy? 8-P

Seriously if it has leaked then the logic board and CPU are both trashed, so if 
it did leak there's your excuse.
