There are some open firmware commands that are supposed to it it but I was never able to make that method work for me :-)

The so-called "LBA48 property" may be added persistently (meaning it is available at boot-time) on some desktops (generally, most graphite Macs).

Essentially, this provides the supported models with the same functionality as the QS 2002 and all later PPC Macs have.

There are three different scripts and each machine can use but two of them, one for the HD bus and another for the optical bus.

Speedtools works only after booting has been completed (because it is a kernel extension), but it is a more general solution for those who can accept an after-boot solution.

Speedtools works on G3 Macs, too.
