I'm not an expert on these G4's, but I was pretty certain the OS X installer disc has a system check that prohibits installation of OS X if the firmware isn't properly upgraded? Unless he transfered or cloned a System from another computer it would seem unlikely to be a firmware issue unless I'm wrong about the installer firmware check?
