"capacitors" being those little silo-like things? No, they look ok.
And everything runs nicely from the Installer CD and from a Disk
Warior CD. I'll get a new drive.

It is a 2005 iMac g5 (ALS). It should have 3 Phillips screws on the
bottom. If it does, open it and look for signs of leakage on the
capacitors. Otherwise, I'd say the hard drive is dead.

Sorry. I wish I could tell you. "powerMac 8.1" - is all that
System Info gives away. It has a 1.8hz processor. No built in
camera. Does that help? I can now get it to start on the Install
Disc but it fails to format the new drive in it. "in/output error"
disk utiliity says.
Thanks for your patience.

There's a label on the bottom of the iMac's foot that will give
system specs, including the serial number. The serial number, when
run throughj several online Apple ID services, will tell which
model of iMac G5 it is.
