after dark wasn't frivolous. it prevented damage to the CRT, and apple
didn't offer
a similar thing... not equivalent to the app. now such things are
superfluous
because mac os has a screensaver app.

people are very attached to after dark. for one reason it was one of the few
animations people saw
on their computers ,and people just naturally like cartoons.

 i remember trying to delete everything except one  animation to save space
on my 20MB drive.
that was 1991.
