Subject: G5 PPC to Mac Pro?

Hi All
I tried to post this to the Mac Pro list but I see no life there for many
months, hopefully I don't get kicked outta here for this question.

I'm in the process of buying a "Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66" early 2009 W3520
processor. It's brand new discontinued from Apple. Is there any significant
reasons to buy a later model at this time. I mainly want to run AutoCad for Mac
and keep adding to my music and DVD collection. I have a G5 Dual 2.7 PPC
machine
but the AutoCad requires Intel 64 bit. Any help here would be much
appreciated.:-)

Hi John,

Last August I bought an ex-demo 8-core MacPro 2.26 ( E5520) so I could run CS5
-
necessary for work.

Domestic senior management has 'inherited' my older G5 dual 2.0, which is more
than adequate for her needs.

You'll be amazed by the speed of the Nehalem machines compared with that of the
PPC G5, although the G5 is still a very capable machine.

I believe the later (ie current) MacPros differ only in the CPU (OWC offer
upgrades to the CPU board, if that's your thing), and many sources show a
degree
of improvement over the Nehalem, but I think in practical terms, increasing the
RAM on a 2009 machine will leave you with something which is not that far
removed from the current offering. Assuming you're getting a good deal
pricewise, go for the 2009 MacPro.

HTH
