YouTube is available in several formats, and there are ways to avoid Flash and force the use of the WebM HTML5 format instead. It may be faster than Flash, but I wouldn't count on it?
The best option for YouTube on older, slower Macs is to use lower quality video which will appear a little blurry but will playback smoothly instead of the choppy "slideshow" motion he's getting now. It used to be that you could add "&fmt=5" to the end of any YouTube URL to get this low quality stream, but I think this doesn't work any longer, but he could still try.
The new method requires you to access your YouTube Account Settings and go to Playback settings and select the low-quality stream as your permanent preference.
