MacOS X is pretty blind. It is depending upon the Open Firmware definition of the two ATA channels. On any Macs which have a Key Largo ATA chip, you may override the O.F. definition with a patch. Either one or both channels. As the patch is persistent in the read-only storage, it is good until the PRAM is reset.
