I booted from the Tiger DVD, went to Disk Utility, set up the "free space" into MacOS format, hit "Partition" button... and all my data was gone! :-(((
(to be honest, Disk Utility informed me that it would happen)

Your mistake was using a Tiger DVD, you need Disk Utility from Leopard in order to have "non-destructive" partitioning capability. If you'd booted a Leopard DVD you would have been able to add the free space without losing all your data.
