I have an old iP2000 (cheap) and I'm quite satisfied with it.
Good quality, fast, and cartridges are cheaper than Epson or HP
equivalent
(let alone Lexmark's, that where crazily expensive)
So I'd advice staying with Canon.
I have a black Lexmark E120n laser on Ethernet cable on my G3 iMac
10,4,11 and OS9.2.2. I also use a Cannon MP210 for color stuff (cheap
ink) on USB both super good printers. My Lexmark will print in Classic.
