I wonder what's going on: Yesterday, this G4 Mystic still worked
normally, logging into one user account automatically at startup.
Today, startup takes a lot longer, and at the end I'm asked to enter
user name and password.
I'm the admin for this Mac, but none of the user names/passwords
work.
Also, when a user logged off, previously, the login window came up as
a list of icons to click on; one only needed to enter a password, not
the username. This has now changed to this box asking for entry of
both.
The three guest accounts on the Mac had/have no password assigned.
I had quick user switching activated.
Ah yes, we're talking 10.4.11

I've checked the boot partition with DiskUtility, which says it's OK.
I've repaired permissions, which were partly broken, but the bootup
behaviour hasn't changed after that.
Then I've copied a backup copy of the boot partition onto the harddisk
with CCC (after starting up from the backup harddisk), but the bootup
behaviour is still the same.

My conclusion: the problem is not on the harddisk, because I cloned
the backup disk's boot partition to the internal HD.
The big question: what else can it be?
