wanted to post a success story that might help someone now or in the
future.

someone gave me a 23" cinema display HD (built 8/2007 according to
serial number lookup)--the aluminum version, model A1082. it was dead
(the owner, an older lady, said "the cleaning woman ran the sweeper
over some power cords and everything blew up").

after some googling, i found the apple service manual for the display,
which showed how to open the case. i removed the display from the
case, and found the connector on the main board for the power-in from
the power supply brick. It tested 24V which is correct.

after a considerable amount of googling, i found the following thread

http://www.ehmac.ca/mac-ipod-help-troubleshooting/75311-cinema-display-troubleshooting-parts-4.html

which describes a fairly common problem with the voltage regulator on
the main board. (see post 35).

having nothing to lose, i ordered a replacement voltage regulator (the
person writing the post recommended a beefier voltage regulator, and
included in the post a reference to a supplier including part
number). it arrived yesterday. as the poster said, the replacement
was larger than the original, so i de-soldered the original from the
board and then soldered 3 leads to the solder pads, and soldered the
new voltage regulator to the leads. (the VR has 3 leads; apple cut the
middle lead from the original VR and used the "tab" on the top of the
VR as the middle lead--the middle lead and the tab are electrically
connected inside the VR). i then used electrical tape to insulate
the solder joints, and taped the VR to a spot on the back of the
display where it would fit when put back into the case.

put the display back into the case, buttoned it up, plugged it in, and
voila--back to life--for $2 plus shipping!!
