Another thought was, how to make the imac "see" the powermac G4 MDD in the other room as what it actually is? is it something in sharing on the MDD that needs to be "entered" chosen etc.? so that the imac in the other room can identify it correctly? hmm.... the mystery goes on.
If these two Macs are running different vintages of OS X this may be an issue? On my Macs shared computers are identified by the "owner" name, such as "John Doe's Computer" where John Doe is the name of the admin ~user setup during the initial installation of OS X. If I have two Macs with identical admin ~user names, the first shared chronologically is "John Doe's Computer" and the subsequent ones are labeled "John Doe's Computer (2)" and so on. I assume they are kept straight by some other identifier, probably the hardware UUID # listed in System Profiler. I assume the model icon is selected based upon the Model Identifier? If the iMac is running Leopard, and the MDD is running Tiger then perhaps the Model Identifier for the MDD isn't known in Leopard? Under Leopard my iBooks & Mini running Tiger are all shown as generic Mac icons which look like an LCD monitor. My Time Capsule is shown as a Time Capsule icon, which would seemingly be more appropriate for the Mini also since the Time Capsule & Mini look very similar.
As Bruce said, the idea of customizing the icon for each unique shared Mac doesn't seem easily possible.
