Is this a common problem? I can't reach my external drive via the
motherboard FireWire ports. When I look in the hardware list the
FireWire category is completely blank. Resetting the PRAM does not
bring it back. I would welcome any other suggestions for things to
try from the audience.
Luckily the external drive also has USB2 and eSATA, so my back-ups
aren't lost.
I've had firewire ports die on several power macs. Very frustrating.
Ultimately the solution is to just use the other ports, or add a pci
card.
Check your system logs to see if there are any firewire related errors.
Try booting with nothing plugged into those ports.
Try booting on a different system - your OS X DVD, for example, just
to rule out a software issue.
