The power manager sets the fans to high when it's not getting further
direction from the OS.

cmd opt P R is the combo to reset the PRAM.

I tried the option key at boot because I have a mirrored back up
drive and cannot get to the boot
drive selection screen. Any ideas?
Get the power manager working first (fresh battery) and zap the pram.
Does the machine bong properly, or beep repeatedly (how many?)?
Perhaps pull some of the memory...
