You heard me --

GO RUN YOUR BACKUPS! NOW!

DON'T WAIT!

It's the beginning of the month -- GET IT DONE!

Is that subtle enough? :)

yea yea yea... Ok... Running backups...

FWIW, this is how I do my weekly and monthly full backups:

0. Quit all applications.

We're gonna do some clean up.
Having files open can create problems!

1. Clean up ~/Library/Application Support/

Quickly weed this folder of stray items that belonged to applications that you deinstalled since the last clean-up.

Many chat apps, such as Adium and Ircle, stash log files here. Dig in and trash what you don't want to keep.

Some browsers have folders here. I like to open each, and just duplicate - in place - the bookmark files. This doesn't create an off-volume backup, but they're handy to have around if you accidentally delete too many bookmarks during your day to day operations! Just select the file and hit cmd-d.

eg: ~/Library/Application Support/Camino/bookmarks.plist".

...Regretfully Safari doesn't follow Apple's own standards. It's bookmarks are in ~/Library/Safari. Don't forget to go dupe its bookmarks!

2. Clean up ~/Library/Preferences/

Quickly weed this folder of stray items that belonged to applications that you deinstalled since the last clean-up.

For a few critical apps, I use the same duplicate-in-place trick on some of the preference files. That way you can quickly revert to them if you mess up app settings. I'm careful to always do this with Ircle -- it loves to corrupt its preferences!

3. Clean up ~/Documents/Eudora Folder/

I donno about other mail apps, but Eudora keeps a lot of junque around, especially if you use it in Sponsored Mode. From this folder, I trash:

Ad Folder
Cache Folder
History List
Delivery Folder
Eudora Log
Old Log
Link History
Spool Folder
Link History Folder

Whoa. Check out the stuff that accumulates in the Parts folder!

Then I make an in-place duplicate of the whole Eudora Folder.

4. Now log out of your user account and log into your admin account.

What? You've been running in your admin account. oops.

Do however much of the above is needed from the admin account.

5. Update then launch OnyX

Maintenane tab.
In all accounts:
Clear histories etc
Clear recents and force empty trash

Cleanup tab
Clear logs then all caches and reboot.

8. Launch Disk Utility and do a verify pass on each volume.

Fix what needs to be fixed.

3. Make the primary backup.

4. Make the secondary backup.

5. Turn on Spotlight.

sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/xxxxxx
sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/yyyyyy
