My question is - am I better tearing the AlBook apart and replacing the power connector or am I better off just getting a really small set of pliers to extract it?

I think the answer is neither. I doubt you'll need to replace the power connector, which would involve soldering. I also doubt you could get a pair of "really small" pliers capable of fitting in the hole and extracting the broken nub.

I suspect you'll need to open the case and use something small, perhaps a tiny screwdriver or safety pin to force the nub out from the inside. It may be possible to bend a hook onto a safety pin and hook the nub and extract it from the outside, but this would be a tight fit I think, and probably won't work. I've had this happen before and had to open the case to remove the nub.
