Apple's USB ports are especially known for giving just the standard 500mW power (that for modern drives can be not enough). I had the same problem with an USB2 card (in a PowerMac G4) and a Western Digital HD: I solved it using a powered USB hub. Did you try the USB connection with both of your Macs? And all of their USB ports? A Mac model could give more power than another model, and even on the same model, a port could give more power than another port.
