IMHO, I'd go with DW first. To me it likely sounds as a damaged directory.

It's a known problem for many external 2.5" drives. Apple's USB ports are
especially known for giving just the standard 500mW power (that for modern
drives can be not enough).
I had the same problem with an USB2 card (in a PowerMac G4) and a Western
Digital HD: I solved it using a powered USB hub.

Did you try the USB connection with both of your Macs? And all of their USB
ports?
A Mac model could give more power than another model, and even on the same
model, a port could give more power than another port.

Anyway, since the other partitions work just fine with FW, I don't think
it's an interface problem.
