The versions are the key. 

The various versions of IOS on the iPod all require specific versions of 
iTunes, which require specific versions of the OS to work. A new iPod almost 
certainly cannot be used with as old a system and OS as that. Any iPod that is 
recognized by the old system will most likely have to be wiped which can be 
done in iTunes, whether an pre-IOS or IOS device.

All iPods (Both original iPod oOS and IOS) also have a Reset menu in the 
General section of the System Settings. This can be used to put it back to 
factory settings, but this may not help this person. 

Exact details will depend on knowing all those version, model, etc things that 
the person did not provide.
