Quicksilver G4, Two internal HDs, Leopard, Tiger, and OS 9.
The WD (My Book Essential) that I have been using for backups (via
Time Machine on 10.5.8, and 10.4.11) now refuses to mount.
I have tried everything to get it to show up on the Desktop under
10.4.11 and 10.5.8 but to no avail.
WD externals. heh. Not very reliable. And older ones are totally
not recommended on Macs.
OTOH, Time Machine is known to shoot itself in the head quite often.
It corrupts its own backup volumes, sometimes to the point they won't
even mount. This is why we consider TM to be a cute hourly
incremental system and recommend using CCC or SuperDuper for your
real backups.
Turn Time Machine OFF, then try connecting the drive.
Check your system.log for error messages.
Try a different cable. Try a different port.
Does the drive sound like it's spinning up?
Can the drive be seen by Disk Utility at all?
Can someone recommend a reliable USB Hard Drive that I should use?
Anything not WD.
My fav these days is to buy an external case and stick a Hitachi or
Seagate mechanism in it.
The normal oogle of vendors have a great selection. Also check
locals stores like Office Despot, as they often have great sales.
Lately I've been getting cheap externals, even refirbs, from sites
like eCost.com.
