Recently my daughter's computer stopped communicating with her HP
printer.
Most likely this is a CUPS problem. CUPS (Common Unix Printing System)
is the software that does the printing in OS X. You can open any
browser and try to connect to <http://127.0.0.1:631/> or <http://localhost:631/
> and see if you get the CUPS page. This isn't a webpage, it's how
CUPS interacts with you via a HTML browser interface.
I'm betting you'll see an error message that says the page isn't
available. If you see this message, you can fix the problem by
reinstalling CUPS. You can get CUPS for up to 10.4.11 directly from
the CUPS ftp site.
Under Finder>Go>Connect to Server... enter the address ftp://www.cups.org/
and when the CUPS server mounts use a new Finder window to navigate
to pub/cups/1.2.12/ and drag the file "cups-1.2.12.dmg" to your
desktop. You may be able to get the file from within a browser by
entering the address <ftp://www.cups.org/pub/cups/1.2.12/cups-1.2.12.dmg/
>?
After you get this file "cup-1.2.12.dmg" you'll need to mount the .dmg
file, and then double-click on the CUPS installer package to start
Installer.app and reinstall CUPS. Once you're finished you'll probably
need to restart your Mac, and things should be ok hopefully?
Best luck!
