My very first guess is that they weren't really uncompressed. My second thought is that something happened during the transfer and somehow some very large temporary files were left in place. My third guess is that you accidentally copied them twice; I've done it more than once. Valter might be right, it could be an issue of different disk cluster sizes; but these would have to be large installers, composed of all teensy tiny files moved from a much smaller disk. (although I'm vaguely remembering that HFS+ deals with this in some fashion.)
