Because Time Machine was heroically trying to keep up with a single computer 
that kept mysteriously changing OS'es, I suspect.

Truthfully, I've never done what you did so I cannot be absolutely certain that 
it is the answer, but I do know that it will work just fine with one volume per 
machine.
