Lately I have noticed that many web sites which I formerly accessed with no problem now take forever to load if they load at all. The only commonality seems to be the use of Open Type fonts in these web pages; the Activity command reports the download of many items of the form "data:font/opentype;base64" cancelled when I attempt to access these pages. What's going on here?

Having any other difficulties/slowness?

What plug-ins do you have installed?

Have you tried clearing your kernel, system, app, and font caches?

Have you tried clearing your Safari caches, cookies, and previews?

Do the above, then when you hit a problem, tell us the exact url.
