It's a PITA to get to it, but, in Mail, for example, you can press ⌘-t to bring 
up the Fonts dialog, then click on the gear icon and select Characters. Then 
select View 'All Characters' and go to Technical Symbols. Then you can go 
through them, where they're names, and the fonts containing those symbols are 
listed below  and way down in the corner is a little 'insert' button to insert 
the character into your message.

I'm sure there's a lot easier way to do this but it's eluding me now.
